During the Iraqi war, virtual field trips replaced the real thing in many schools. Thanks to funding from Project VIEW, a Federal Technology Innovation Challenge Grant led by the Schenectady City School District, several schools in the Albany diocese were able to extend student learning beyond the classroom walls through the use of videoconferencing.
The juniors at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons visited the Albany Institute of History and Art. At St. Luke's, Sr. Grace took her students to the Cincinatti Zoo, Sue Pagones and MaryEllen Remillard and the first graders went to the Toledo Zoo, Sr. Anne Schwartz' Pre-K visited the Buffalo Zoo, Sr. Donna Bradle's 5th and 6th grade students went to the Louisville Science Center and Jackie Oliveira and Linda Mossey's kindergarteners visited the Center for Puppetry Arts. Linda Meany's fifth graders at St. James will be learning about blue crabs on June 6 and the

fourth graders there will be learning about bones at the Cumberland Science Museum on June 3, 2003.
Many schools, including St. Pius X, St. Ambrose, St. Mary's Institute and St. Stanislaus, will be purchasing VIGO portable videoconferencing equipment and thus be able to also have their students enjoy this unique learning experience. They will join St. Casimir, St. Luke's, St. Anthony, Cohoes Catholic, St. James and Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons who previously participated in Project VIEW videoconferencing benefits.
New this summer through the Project VIEW grant, in addition to videoconference training, there will be 3-day sessions where teachers at the same grade level from different schools in the diocese will work together to create collaborative videoconferencing projects for next year.
