Five Saint Ambrose Students Win Art Contest Since 1952, the Lions Eye Bank at Albany has helped over 10,000 people receive the gift of sight through the miracle of corneal transplant surgery. Catholic School children were invited to participate in the Eye Bank's "Through Their Eyes the Gift of Sight" Poster Contest. This contest is meant to enhance awareness of and appreciation for the gift of sight by our young student artists. A 2006 calendar will be made using the winning posters of the contest. St. Ambrose School art teacher, Sr. Vivian Giulianelli, S.A., was proud to announce that 5 winners of this contest were from St. Ambrose school : Charlie G.'s (7th) art will appear on the calendar cover, Dean M.'s (5th) art will be the April design, Stephanie M.'s (2nd grade) art will be the June design, Elizabeth S.'s (7th) art will be the November design, and K.K.'s art will be the Greeting card. Sales of the resulting calendar will be used to fund medical treatment and educational materials for underprivileged children in need of eye care. Also, the Eye Bank will have Christmas ornaments made from the selected student's artwork which will adorn the Eye Bank's tree. The tree will be on display at the Albany Institute of History and Art's Festival of Trees. On Thursday, April 28, 2005, the Lions Eye Bank hosted a reception in the Empire State Plaza to formally recognize the teachers and students. Sr. Mary Jane Herb, IHM, PH.D, Superintendent of Schools was the speaker and Richard Fisher, Chairman of the Board of the Lions Eye Bank presented the awards. |
