Mr. Streck and students in the middle school have been busy preparing for the upcoming Future City Competition. Future City Competition is a national competition in its second decade. It is a program developed for seventh and eighth grade students to help them discover and foster interests in math, science and engineering. Students have to use their creative and innovative imaginations to design a city of the future (Population = 50,000) with a computer program called SimCity 3000. The students work with their guiding teachers to design and build the city, using math, science, engineering and technology. The competition also enhances the student’s writing and presentation skills. The students pick the type of terrain that their city will be located in and they determine where their city’s industrial, commercial and residential areas will be located. The students strive to have their city be self-sufficient, keeping taxes, pollution and crime levels to a minimum. The competition will be held on January 15, 2005 at the RPI campus.
