Welcome to
4th Grade Science
with Mrs. Pyzanowski

May/June 2007

Fourth Grade students have just recently finished taking their New York State Science Exams. They did an outstanding job and 90% of the class scored a 4 which is the highest level and exceeds NYS expectations. I am very proud of them all!! They have also just finished aquatic animal reports and presentations and did an outstanding job. The poster boards were all beautiful and will be on display at the learning fair. We are now working on a chapter about the solar system and will then move on to our last unit – The Human Body. We will learn about the digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems.

November/December 2006

We began the year with a Unit on Life Science. Students learned about flower parts and we dissected a flower in lab. We learned about animal classifications and habitats. We discussed food chains and food webs as well as survival techniques and adaptations such as hibernation, migration and camouflage. We have now begun our second unit on Physical Science. We are learning about matter, mass, volume, and density. We are also learning the standard metric measurements for length, mass, and volume. We will be talking about magnets, electricity, and series and parallel circuits in the next few weeks.

St. Ambrose 4th Grade Science Teacher, Julie Pyzanowski announces the results of this year's New York State 4th Grade Science exam:  14  4th Grade students took the exam.  13 of those students achieved a Level 4 score, the highest level possible and 1 student scored a Level 3. No students scored in Level 2 or Level 1. Congratulations to Mrs. Pyzanowski and the 4th grade students. These are impressive results!

Level 3 These students meet the standards and, with continued steady growth, should pass the Regents examination.
Level 2 These students need extra help to meet the standards and pass the Regents examination.
Level 1 These students have serious academic deficiencies.

October 2005
Students began the year with a Unit on Life Science. They learned about categorizing plants and labeling flower parts. We dissected a flower as a lab activity and labeled the parts. Students then learned about categorizing animals into groups. They studied animal behaviors and habitats. They are currently learning about food chains and food webs.
